These are the larvae of the midge fly , also called phantom
midge larvae, they are used as a living food for fishes
and salamanders. These glassworma are hunters, mostly for
waterfleas
and cyclops, but most of all: .

Glassworms are almost transparant except for two pair of black
kidney shaped organs that function as an air balloon: Inflating
it with air makes the glassworm going up. Deflating makes them travel
to the bottom of the ditch.

Glassworms can be given as food forstickelbacks,
they are there natural enemies, and waterinsekts, like the waterbeetle..
Glassworms contain much less calories as bloodworms , and are
so are more expensive.
So wateranimals that hunt with there eyes have trouble
hunting them, like watersalamanders.
